Test day support

A familiar face in the back seat can make a real difference. If you'd like me alongside you during your test — not as the examiner, but as your support person — just say the word.

Available at Albany, Glenfield, Silverdale & Orewa

In New Zealand, you're allowed to have one support person sit in the back seat during your restricted or full licence test. They can't speak or help you — but they can be there.

For many learners, especially those with driving anxiety, neurodivergent learners, or anyone who has failed a previous test, that familiar presence is genuinely calming. I've heard from students that knowing I'm in the car changes how they feel walking into the test.

Someone who knows you

I've taught you — I know your strengths and how you drive. A parent or friend hasn't. That context matters.

Calm under pressure

I won't be nervous on your behalf. I'll be quietly confident, which tends to rub off.

Available at your test centre

I cover Albany, Glenfield, Silverdale, and Orewa — all the main North Shore test centres.

Especially useful for neurodivergent learners

If you have ADHD, autism, anxiety, or another learning difference, having a familiar, trusted person in the car during a high-stakes situation can meaningfully reduce stress and help you perform at your actual ability — not your anxious ability.

Common questions

Can you have a support person in the car during a NZ driving test?+
Yes. For restricted and full licence tests in New Zealand, you are permitted to have one support person sitting in the back seat. The support person cannot give instructions or communicate with you during the test — but their presence is allowed.
What does a support person do during the driving test?+
A support person sits quietly in the back seat. They do not communicate with you or the examiner during the test. Their role is simply to be a calming, familiar presence — which for many people significantly reduces nerves.
Why would I want Adrian as my support person rather than a parent or friend?+
Adrian knows the test, knows the routes, and knows you from your lessons. Having someone who has coached you through the process sitting in the back is different from having a family member who might be just as nervous as you. Many students find it genuinely reassuring.
Is this available for both restricted and full licence tests?+
Yes. Adrian can be your support person for either your restricted or full licence test, at any of the North Shore test centres he covers.
How do I request this service?+
Just tick the relevant box on the lesson request form. It's listed as a mandatory question — so make sure to answer it even if you're not sure yet.

Tick the support person box on the lesson request form and I'll sort the rest.
