Common questions
Can I drive in NZ on my overseas licence?+
Yes — for up to 12 months from when you become a resident. After that, you'll need to convert to a New Zealand licence. If you have a licence from a recognised country (UK, Australia, South Africa, certain others), you can convert directly without sitting a full practical test. Other countries may require a practical test.
Which overseas licences can be converted without a practical test?+
NZTA maintains an up-to-date list of recognised countries. Common ones include Australia, UK, South Africa, Canada, USA, and many European countries. Check the NZTA website or ask me — I can give you a straightforward answer for your specific country.
What if I need to sit a practical test?+
If your country isn't on the recognised list, you'll likely need to sit the restricted or full licence practical test. I can help you prepare for this — I work with new migrants regularly and understand the process well.
Do driving lessons help with conversion?+
Even if your licence converts directly, a few lessons on NZ road rules and local conditions is highly recommended. NZ has specific give-way rules, road conditions, and left-hand drive that differ significantly from many countries.
No auto-booking — I'll read your request and be in touch to confirm.
